I heard there is a show where Jerry, due to losing his voice, doesn't do ANY vocals. Bobby does all of his songs. While I rather hear Jer anyday, but since he is unable on this show, he heard he is SMOKES on the guitar instead. Only problem is I don't know what show this is. An answer would be most welcome. ;) T'anks!

Jerry showed up, guitar in hand, ready play in The very moment, his serenity cracks... captured on camera...
"Oh, bummer."
This is the show where Jerry doesn't sing.
There's nothing to sing about - it's over for the scene's sweet and innocent '60s energy, and we see it evaporate, with a chill in the air... Good times gone, and nothing was gonna bring a generation back from the abyss of their own hubris and excess... not for several hours at the very least, a slight lull in the celebration you might say, though the music never stopped... but Jerry doesn't sing on that particular day.
Could or should he have? Cryptical Envelopement? Doing That Rag? Cozmic Charlie? Dire Wolf? Death Don't Have No Mercy? And So We Leave The Castle? Perhaps an hour or so of intensely shrill Feedback with simulated police cars and baby cries? And finally, Whatever Became Of The Baby? The ideal venue for this rarely if ever played song...

He did get a song out of being stuck in the bus near the "action" where the band sat there observing life and death from a window, taking in as much as could be stomached.
"We've had enough of being polite, get out, go away... There are a number of people on or around this stage who should not be here. Consequently, the musicians on this stage are playing with something like, 200 people breathing down their necks... now can I please ask that everyone leaves the stage, and we'll go back to playing music and nothing else. The Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Airplane."

Now after that warm welcome not one person moves offstage, except for Marty Balin, who comes to, later that Saturday Afternoon, not sure who in particular made all these boot heel indents on his chest and face. He wasn't conscious at the time.
Sometimes it's better not to know.
Mister Cutler told me so...

It should also be noted that January 6th was the show he sang for the first set, but did not sing during the second. All three shows have nice things to offer. Jerry's voice never really recovered for the rest of that tour, which I obtained over the winter and got to hear all of. There is a Black Peter on one show, maybe 1.17, Jerry sounds just terrible. There are similar instances of poor vocals in November/December, thinking Fire on the Mountain 11/24/78.

January 7,8 1978 Golden Hall, San Diego--these are the shows...great playing throughout by Garcia, the soundboards sound pretty decent, too...notice that both shows contain all Weir songs (except Sunrise and Passenger), no Garcia songs sung by Weir...

January 7-SET 1 Minglewood, Cassidy, Sunrise, Passenger, Mexicali>Me & My Uncle, LL Rain, El Paso>Let It Grow>Promised Land SET 2 Jack Straw, Dancin'>Samson, Playin'> Drums> NFA > A&A 1 More Sat Night

January 8--SET 1 Jack Straw, Mama Tried > Big River, Sunrise, It's All Over now, LL Rian, Lazy Lightenin'> Supplication SET 2 Samson, Good Lovin'. Estimated Prophet> Drums> Space> O1 > Truckin'> Sugar Mag Johnny B. Goode
